Decree banning the placing of garden incinerators on the market

The burning of household green waste is banned. Open air burning accounts for around 3 % of national particulate matter emissions (PM10) and thus contributes to air pollution, which is the third highest cause of death in France (after tobacco and alcohol), with 48 000 premature deaths occurring per year.

Despite the ban, it is estimated that around 29 000 garden incinerators are sold each year, sometimes accompanied by marketing messages which give the impression that such products are beneficial to the environment. The French authorities intend to ban the placing of garden incinerators on the market as of 1 January 2019. It is not appropriate to permit an individual to buy this type of equipment when its use is not authorised.
