The decree relates to tanning salons, defined as any undertaking operating at least one tanning bed.

Draft Royal Decree defining the conditions for the operation of tanning salons

The current Royal Decree of 20 June 2002, which has been supplemented on several occasions, lays down a number of conditions for the operation of tanning salons, intended to protect consumers and their health.

The SCHEER opinion of 17 November 2016 is very clear about the risks associated with ultraviolet radiation and tanning bed use. Therefore, the conditions for the operation of tanning salons are made more stringent, in order to enhance the level of protection of consumer health.

The decision was made to create an entirely new decree instead of an amendment decree. This allows for better structuring and consistency of the text. Additional or more precise conditions are defined for the communication of health risks, for access by consumers, and for the operation of tanning beds in tanning salons. The maximum radiation standard has not been amended.
