Motorcycle Helmets.Amendments to existing legislation to extend the requirement to wear motorcycle helmets on motor quadricycles when used on public roads. The definition of motor quadricycle in these Regulations will be drafted to include only those motor quadricycles which are built on a motorcycle platform and will exclude those built on a car platform. This will ensure that there will only be a requirement to wear helmets on all-terrain or non car-like motor quadricycles.

Amendment to the existing Motor Cycles (Protective Headgear) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 to ensure legal provisions are extended to mandate that all riders of motor quadricycles wear a motorcycle helmet when using this vehicle on public roads. There is an existing requirement on all riders of motor bicycles to wear a helmet.The definition of motor quadricycle in these Regulations will be drafted to include only those motor quadricycles which are built on a motorcycle platform and will exclude those built on a car platform. This will ensure that there will only be a requirement to wear helmets on all-terrain or non car-like motor quadricycles.There are no amendments to the prescribed type of motorcycle helmet required to be worn.
