Horses imported into Chile definitively or under the dual hemisphere shuttle system

The draft satisfies the requirements for specific sanitary standards for importation into Chile.

A non-exhaustive summary of the provisions of the draft is provided below.

The following points are mentioned:

1-1 The country or area of origin must have been declared officially free of African horse sickness by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and this status must have been favourably assessed by Chile.

1-2 The farm of origin must have had in place a sanitary control programme, including monitoring of the females with which the colts have had contact, and a vector-control programme. For 90 days prior to shipment, there must have been no signs of the following diseases at the farm of origin or on the premises: equine infectious anaemia, equine encephalomyelitis (Eastern, Western and Venezuelan), rabies, piroplasmosis, surra or "mal de caderas" (Trypanosoma evansi), equine influenza, contagious equine metritis, salmonellosis (Salmonella abortus-equi), equine viral arteritis, equine rhinopneumonitis (Herpes virus types I and IV); Japanese encephalitis and Borna disease.

1-3 A minimum 30-day pre-shipment isolation period, under official supervision, in a place determined by the competent health authority of the country of origin, where the animals are separated from the population of origin. During this isolation period, they must not show signs of transmissible diseases and must undergo the following diagnostic tests, with negative results, and receive the treatments and vaccinations indicated below. In addition, the horses may receive no treatment or vaccination during this period other than those indicated in the notified resolution. Treatment and vaccination instructions are provided for the following conditions: equine infectious anaemia, equine encephalomyelitis (Eastern, Western and Venezuelan), vesicular stomatitis, equine rhinopneumonitis (Herpes virus types I and IV), leptospirosis, equine influenza, contagious equine metritis (Taylorella equigenitalis), glanders (Burkholderia mallei), parasites, piroplasmosis (Babesia caballi and Theileria equi), and salmonellosis (Salmonella abortus-equi).

1-4 A thorough clinical inspection at the time of shipment, under official supervision.

1-5 Requirements regarding the content of the official health certificate. Microchip identification satisfying the ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 international standards. 1-6 The stay in Chile will be officially monitored at a SAG-authorized location or on-farm quarantine facility when space is unavailable in the SAG Livestock Quarantine Station, for at least ten days for non-breeding horses (castrated animals, males younger than two years and females younger than 18 months) and for at least 15 days for horses to be used for breeding. The quarantine period will end when the proper information has been entered on the animal health certificate, the results of all laboratory tests requested during the quarantine have been received and the animals show no signs of infectious or parasitic diseases. Repeal of SAG Resolution No. 3176 of 2015.
