Projectile toys – a projectile toy is a product that is designed or clearly intended for use in play by a child under 14 years of age that is capable of launching a projectile.

The safety standard captures two types of projectile toys:

•      projectile toys with stored energy, where the projectile is propelled by means of a discharge mechanism capable of storing and releasing energy such as toy 'nerf' guns and spring-loaded devices.

•      projectile toys without stored energy where the projectile is discharged by the energy imparted by the user, such as a bow and arrow set.

The safety standard does not apply to toys that are designed to fly, such as remote control helicopters or aeroplanes.

The purpose of the safety standard is to prevent serious injury or death including serious facial and eye injuries, and choking when children are playing with projectile toys.

The safety standard for projectile toys references certain sections of the following voluntary standards:

·         Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2019 Safety of toys Part 1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties)

·         International Standard (ISO 8124‑1:2018 Safety of toys—Part 1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties)

·         European Standard (EN 71‑1:2014 + A1:2018: Safety of toys—Part 1: Mechanical and physical properties).

·         American Standard (ASTM F963‑17 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety)

The safety standard provides suppliers with the option to comply with certain requirements of any of the above listed standards.
