Smoked meat and fish as well as traditionally smoked meat and fishery products.

Regulations amending the Swedish Food Agency’s regulations (LIVSFS 2012:3) on undesirable substances in foods.

Meat and fish as well as meat and fishery products smoked in Sweden over glowing wood or other plant materials may be placed on the Swedish market provided that the levels in these products do not exceed:

- 5.0 μg/kg edible part for benzo(a)pyrene
- 30.0 μg/kg edible part for the sum of benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and chrysene.
The food business operators concerned shall apply good practice in smoking the foods referred to in the first subparagraph in order to limit the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), where this is possible without losing the desired organoleptic characteristics of the food.
The authorisation applies to products that are smoked and consumed in Sweden, which is why mutual approval is not applicable.
Sections 1 and 2 of LIVSFS 2012:3 constitute Swedish special provisions in relation to Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1255 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as regards maximum levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in traditionally smoked meat and smoked meat products and traditionally smoked fish and smoked fishery products and establishing a maximum level of PAHs in powders of food of plant origin used for the preparation of beverages.
