Regulation on the control measures for certain substances and residues thereof in live animals and food of animal origin intended for human consumption

The draft Regulation lays down the control measures that the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) is to apply to monitor substances and groups of residues, the requirements for the self-control systems for residues put in place by owners of animals and food of animal origin intended for human consumption, and the measures that the BFSA is to take in the case of suspicion of or an established violation. The draft aims to ensure a high level of consumer health protection and prevent the possibility of food derived from animals, which have been submitted to illegal treatment, entering the market.

The application of the Regulation will lead to unification of the conditions and the procedure for control by the BFSA over the substances and the groups of residues that are subject to monitoring and the measures to be taken in the case of suspicion of or an established violation.
The draft Regulation gives business operators the right to have in place a self-control system for residues. The implementation of the act will minimise the likelihood of food derived from animals, which have been submitted to illegal treatment, entering the market, thus ensuring a higher level of consumer health protection.
