The Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020 will set the nutritional standards that food and drink served in Scottish schools will be required to meet. These Regulations will replace the Scottish Government's current regulations governing the nutritional requirements for food and drink served in Scottish schools, the Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2008. Those regulations were notified to the Commission under Directive 98/34/EC (O.J. L 24, 21.7.98, p.37) as amended by Directive 98/48/EC (O.J. L 217, 5.8.98, p.18).

The Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020

The overarching objective of the Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020 is to update the nutritional requirements in the Scottish Government's existing regulations governing the nutritional requirements for food and drink in schools, which have been in place since 4th August 2008. These Regulations will require that schools in Scotland offer greater access to fruit and vegetables than at present; they set out to reduce the amount of sugar that can be consumed across the course of the school day; they will place a limit on the amount of red and red processed meat that can be served across the course of the school week; and they will also introduce a school dining service that better accomodates the needs of secondary schools pupils (age 11-19) to ensure they still get the nutrients they need.
