Televisions intended for private use that can receive digital terrestrial television (DTT) services

UHD compatibility of television receivers (Article 15(1) of the draft Act on audiovisual communication and cultural sovereignty in the digital age)

Article 15(1) of the draft Act on audiovisual communication and cultural sovereignty in the digital age aims to ensure that television receivers placed on the market in France will be able to receive all television services broadcast by terrestrial radio relay, notably including the new ultra-high-definition (UHD) programmes that should be broadcast on this network in the near future.

The compatibility requirements are conditional upon the actual broadcasting of UHD programmes by terrestrial radio relay: when the broadcasting of these programmes covers at least 30% of the French population.

The Order of 24 December 2001 relating to digital terrestrial television establishing the characteristics of the signals emitted, as amended, provides for UHD programmes to be broadcast in accordance with the DVB-T2 and HEVC standards. These requirements will effectively mean that televisions and adapters placed on the market in France will have to be compatible with these standards.

These compatibility requirements with the new standards will apply to televisions with screens larger than 110 centimetres (diagonal measurement), as of 12 months after the start of broadcasting UHD programmes to 30% of the population. They will then be generally applied to all individual adapters and televisions six months later.
