Affecting cattle herds

The Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (Scotland) Amendment Order 2020

The Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (Scotland) Order 2019 (the 2019 Order) required keepers of breeding bovine animals/herds to take samples (at their own expense) from their herds/animals on an annual basis, and to test (qualifying) calves not born to breeding herds/bovine animals within 40 days of birth, for the purpose of determining whether BVD virus is present. This process generates a BVD status/finding for a herd/animal. Herds that have been BVD not negative for 15 months or more must obtain a BVD status for every animal in the herd. Movement restrictions are placed on herds that have the status of BVD not negative, and on individual cattle that test positive for BVD virus. When an animal is disclosed as BVD virus positive, any subsequent BVD sampling must be done by a vet.

The Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (Scotland) Amendment Order 2020 increases the disease control measures when an animal is disclosed as BVD virus positive. The 2020 Amendment Order requires that it must be housed separately from other cattle that are BVD negative or have no individual status.
