Unsafe Goods (Inclined Infant Sleep Products) Notice 2019. (3 page(s), in English)

The unsafe goods notice prohibits the import and supply of certain inclined infant sleep products in New Zealand, as defined in the instrument. The decision to urgently introduce the unsafe goods notice was based on evidence that came to light in 2019 that the products of concern have been implicated as causal  in the death of 73 infants overseas and that the products do not align with internationally recognised guidance for safe sleep for infants.

An unsafe goods notice is an interim intervention to mitigate the risks of harm to New Zealand consumers from a particular product or class product. The Unsafe Goods (Inclined Infant Sleep Products) Notice 2019 remains in effect for 18 months from the date of publication in the New Zealand Gazette - i.e. from 19 December 2019 to 19 July 2021. The Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs may, during these 18 months revoke; amend; extend; make permanent; or replace the notice with product safety regulations.

Trading Standards has committed to review the need for ongoing risk mitigation for the identified inclined infant sleep products and will include this work in its wider review of infant sleep products that is currently underway.

Further information on the intervention and its rationale is available on the Trading Standards website.
