The proposed amendments to the Food Regulations 1985 [P.U.(A) 437/1985] involve the following:

1.    Amendment to regulations 118, 119, 120, 122, 124, 125, 128, 129, 131, 132, 134A, 134B and 134C regarding specific requirements of sweetening substance in relation to definition, specification and the use of food additives.

2.    The purpose of the amendments on all provisions of food additives is to align the text with subregulation 19(2) of the Food Regulations 1985. The conditions under which food additives may be used in sweetening can be directly referred to the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA, CXS 192-1995);

3.    Insertion of three new regulations, namely regulations 125B (dried glucose syrup), 128A (lactose) and 134D (evaporated creamer), which prescribe the definitions, specifications and labelling requirements.
