Biosecurity import conditions for natural casings

An issues paper for the import of natural casings for human consumption into Australia has been released for comment from industry and other stakeholders. The paper considers scientific information, supply chain arrangements, manufacturing processes and alignment with international standards: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/policy/risk-analysis/animal/natural-casings.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry previously consulted on this issue between November 2024 and March 2025 as part of an import risk review.

The department is now progressing this assessment as a Biosecurity Import Risk Assessment (BIRA). This is a formal risk assessment process under the Biosecurity Act 2015. It provides several opportunities for stakeholder input, oversight by the department's Scientific Advisory Group, and the Inspector General of Biosecurity: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/policy/risk-analysis/undertaking-import-risk-analysis/guidelines.
