Wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, maize, millet, buckwheat

Specification ‘selected quality’ — production and processing of cereals and buckwheat: wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, maize, millet, buckwheat

Producers and processors, represented by the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia — Chamber of Agricultural and Food Enterprises, the Cooperative Association of Slovenia and the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, have joined forces to prepare the specification for the cereals sector. The content of the specification was also approved by the Chamber of Commerce of Slovenia.

The proposed specification lays down additional requirements for the cereals sector, which mainly concern production. A 5-year rotation plan is required, prohibiting the production of the same type of cereal twice in a row on the same area. Due to the risk of fusariosis, the ban on the cultivation of wheat and barley in a two-field with maize is additionally applied. When growing cereals, in order to avoid the possibility of infection with fungal pathogens, it is mandatory to plant organic residues in the soil. Fertilisation with digestate or compost from urban waste water treatment plants shall be prohibited. Plant protection products authorised in integrated or organic cereal production may be used. The use of means for desiccation is prohibited. At the time of harvest, the measurement of deoxynivalenol (DON) is mandatory. Drip disinsection of cereals is prohibited.
In processing, all ingredients used from cereals and buckwheat must be certified as ‘selected quality’.All other basic ingredients used for which there is a valid specification for the ‘selected quality’ scheme (e.g. milk and milk products, fruit,...) must also be certified as ‘selected quality’.
The specification refers to the labelling of products and products for which the basic raw material is produced and processed in the same country. The requirements of the proposed specification therefore relate to labelling with the ‘selected quality’ logo indicating the country of production and processing of the basic raw material. The indication of the country of production and processing is interchangeable.
