The Swedish Transport Agency’s regulations and general recommendations on the management and control of ships’ ballast water and sediments

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments was adopted in 2004. Sweden has acceded to the Convention. The implementation of the Convention into Swedish law is carried out through the Ballast Water Act and the Ballast Water Ordinance (attached as background document). The purpose of the Ballast Water Regulations is to implement the international regulations by supplementing the provisions of the Act and the Ordinance on the points where the authority has been delegated the power to introduce regulations.

The regulations contain, inter alia, provisions on requirements for the approval of systems and methods for the treatment of ballast water, as well as provisions on the design of ships, surveys and certificates. On the grounds that the basic regulations, which were adopted in 2017, do not appear to have been notified earlier, all of the provision in the regulations on the management of ballast water are notified now.
