Materials and articles intended to come into contact with food

Draft Act amending the Food Act (2006:804)

The European Parliament and the Council have adopted Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 of 27 October 2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing Directives 80/590/EEC and 89/109/EEC (hereinafter the Food Contact Materials Regulation).

Sweden is now proposing amendments to the Food Act so that the provisions of the Food Contact Materials Regulation can be applied effectively.
The proposal introduces a provision into the Food Act generally prohibiting, in addition to what follows from Union law, the placing on the market of materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, which do not comply with the essential requirements of Articles 3, 4 and 15 of the Food Contact Materials Ordinance.
The Government Bill on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food is expected to be considered by the Riksdag in the spring of 2021 and the provisions should thereafter be able to enter into force on 1 July 2021.
