Draft Sector Agreement to increase the supply of certified wood products from sustainably managed forests 2019-2024

The Federal Minister for Energy, the Environment and Sustainable Development, Marie Christine Marghem, the relevant professional associations and the FSC and PEFC certification systems have concluded a new sector agreement to increase the supply of certified wood products from sustainably managed forests.

This involves a duty of care for the signatories to pursue the following objectives by means of respectful collaboration:

- increase the share of wood products from sustainably managed forests on the Belgian market;

- raise awareness amongst professionals in the sector and consumers regarding the environmental and social benefits of using sustainable wood in the context of the circular economy and as a renewable raw material, as well as around the importance of certification for sustainable forest management.

One key amendment compared to the previous sector agreement (2011-2018) is an expansion of the scope to include more secondary wood products (such as windows and doors, furniture, paper and cardboard).
