Legislation laying down maximum levels for the salt content in bread.

Portugal intends to make the first amendment to Law No 75/2009 of 12 August 2009 in order to lay down maximum levels for the salt content in bread as well as guidelines for the labelling of pre-packaged food intended for human consumption. The draft Law aims to amend the maximum permitted salt content in bread after it has been baked from 1.4 g salt per 100 g bread to: 1) 1.3 g salt per 100 g bread from 1 January 2019; 2) 1.2 g salt per 100 g bread from 1 January 2020; 3) 1.1 g salt per 100 g bread from 1 January 2021 and 4) 1.0 g salt per 100 g bread from 1 January 2022. It also aims to broaden its scope to include all the different types of bread produced or marketed in Portugal, irrespective of the country in which they were made; only speciality bread containing added meat preparations and sausage-meat is excluded from the scope.
