Notice of Proposal to Update the Incorporated by Reference Document entitled Nutrition Labelling – Table of Daily Values (available in English and French)

Health Canada's Food Directorate is proposing updates to the potassium and sodium values for specific age groups in the Table of Daily Values to reflect the updated 2019 Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for sodium and potassium. The DRIs are a comprehensive set of nutrient reference values for healthy populations that are used to inform nutrition policies and programs.

The Table of Daily Values sets out the recommended amounts of nutrients (the daily value) for specific age groups for nutrition labelling purposes. These are the reference points upon which the percent daily value (%DV) in the Nutrition Facts table are based. Canada's current daily values for potassium and sodium are based on the 2005 DRIs and thus Health Canada proposes to update the Table of Daily Values to reflect the new 2019 DRIs.
