Extend the use of sodium phosphate, tribasic to certain frozen products (ICS Code: 67.220.20)

Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses to Extend the Use of Sodium Phosphate, Tribasic To Certain Frozen Products. Language(s): English and French. Number of pages: 4 and 5

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of sodium phosphate, tribasic, to reduce processing losses and thaw drip in frozen shrimp and frozen cooked shrimp.

The results of the premarket assessment support the safety of sodium phosphate, tribasic, for its requested use and its efficacy for such use when used in combination with other phosphates permitted for the same purpose. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of sodium phosphate, tribasic described in the information document by modifying the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses effective 28 April 2021.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for inquiries or for those wishing to submit new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
