The method is used to determine the water absorption (swelling capacity) of the grain size fractions.

RVS 11/06/26 Quality assurance in construction, testing, stone material, water absorption of grain size fractions smaller than 0.125 mm (Enslin test)

Water absorption refers to the ability of a substance to absorb water. This absorption consists of adhesive water, crystal water, and intercrystalline spring water (e.g., in clay minerals). Water absorption is measured as a percentage of the mass of water absorbed relative to the dry mass of the grain size fraction used. The test result depends on the largest grain size of the tested grain size fractions.
