The scope of application covers liquid biofuels, biofuels, solid biomass and gaseous biofuels, as well as electricity generated from liquid biofuels and biomass fuels.

Ordinance recasting the Biomass Electricity Sustainability Ordinance and the Biofuel Sustainability Ordinance and amending the Special Fees Ordinance of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture

The replacement of the Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC with the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 has led, among other things, to new requirements under European law for promoting electricity generation and biofuel production from biomass. These amendments relate to the scope of application, sustainability criteria to be met, greenhouse gas reduction requirements and the introduction of plant thresholds.
The corresponding new requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 aim to minimise the risk of negative impacts on biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions from the use of biomass as a source of renewable energy.
