Order amending the Order on the hygiene of foodstuffs

The amendments to the Order enable primary producers to use outside help for the slaughtering and dressing of poultry and rabbits. The reasons behind this are the increased number of animals that may, as proposed, be slaughtered on primary holdings going forward, as well as the practical and hygienic challenges that may accompany such an increase.

It will also be possible for primary producers to eviscerate the slaughtered animals as part of the slaughtering process, without having to set up a retail establishment. In other words, a primary producer can supply slaughtered animals that have been eviscerated to consumers and local retail establishments.

Going forward, the repeal of § 5(3) allows primary producers, in the direct supply of eggs, to reuse egg cartons and the like returned by their customers.
