Draft Order on the addition of iodine to household salt and salt in bread and general bakery products, etc.

The aim of the regulation is to increase the mandatory enrichment with iodine of household salt and salt in bread and general bakery products from 13 mg of iodine per kg of salt to 20 mg of iodine per kg of salt.

Household salt and salt in bread and general bakery products that are lawfully marketed in another EU - or EEA country - is not covered by the requirement (mutual recognition). Bread and general bakery products to which salt with added iodine is included as an ingredient is not covered by the requirement if the foodstuffs in question are lawfully produced in a third country in which the addition of iodine is compulsory.

In specific cases, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration may grant an exemption from the requirement for adding iodine so that household salt and salt included in bread and general bakery products may have less than 20 mg of iodine or no iodine added per kg of salt. The addition of more than 20 mg of iodine to household salt and salt included in bread and general bakery products is regulated by the Regulation on the addition of vitamins and minerals to foodstuffs. Household salt with added iodine in accordance with Danish Veterinary and Food Administration requirements must be labelled with the text ‘Salt has had iodine added in accordance with Danish Veterinary and Food Administration requirements’.
