Carnobacterium maltaromaticum CB1 (ICS Code: 67.220.20)

Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Preservatives to Enable the Use of Carnobacterium maltaromaticum CB1 as an Antimicrobial Preservative in Certain Meat and Poultry Meat Products –

Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0097

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a detailed safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of the bacterium Carnobacterium maltaromaticum strain CB1 (C. maltaromaticum CB1) to limit or inhibit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in various meat and poultry products.

C. maltaromaticum CB1 is already permitted for use in Canada as a preservative on four standardized meat products, namely vacuum-packed wieners, vacuum-packed sliced roast beef, vacuum-packed sliced cooked ham, and vacuum-packed sliced cooked turkey.

As no safety concerns were raised through Health Canada's assessment the Department has enabled the food additive use of C. maltaromaticum CB1 described in the information document below by updating the List of Permitted Preservatives http://hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/secur..., effective 1 June 2017.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
