ELOT TS 1501-10-06-04-02 Pruning of shrubs

The aim of this Specification is to present and apply good practices and methods concerning the pruning of several kinds of shrubs to ensure their health and growth, as well as their aesthetic appearance, and to guarantee that they are not a hazard for pedestrians and especially visually impaired persons.

Appropriate techniques and forms of pruning are defined in order to give the plant a shape relevant to its type and variety and to influence the plant's growth in a positive or negative way (according to the aim pursued). Requirements are also defined concerning the renewal of old shrubs and the programming of a regular cycle of pruning, in order to optimise the duration of the shrubs' flourish.

Although each plant requires a different kind of pruning, this Specification aims to group together and present the general rules that are the result of scientific research and experience.

By way of exception, the pruning techniques for rose bushes are treated differently.
