Decree on the maximum permissible content of trans fats in foods

The decree was proposed based on studies showing that the significant consumption of trans fats may have negative consequences on the health of children and adults. Food analyses performed on the Slovenian market show that just over a third of foods being sold in shops, bakeries, delicatessens, confectioners and restaurants, constituting a significant portion of the Slovenian diet, contain a high level of trans fats, i.e. up to 9 %. Based on the study findings, the availability of foods containing high levels of trans fats on the Slovenian market is increasing.

A preliminary assessment of exposure to trans fats among the Slovenian population indicates that certain population groups might be at risk of excessive trans fat intake due to their dietary habits or socio-economic position. Out of concern for consumer health, we think that Slovenia should adopt a decree that will set the maximum permissible content of trans fats in foods at an acceptable level.
