It applies to off-grid lighting appliances or kits that can be installed by a typical user without employing a technician. The kits are generally comprised of a light source (LED, CFL, or other), a rechargeable energy storage device (usually a battery), an energy generation device or source (PV module, dynamo, AC grid, unregulated DC input, or other), and internal electronics. Lighting appliances or kits with PV modules larger than 10 W (peak power under standard test conditions) are excluded from the scope of this standard.
