Regulations Amending the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (Bus Seat Belts) (12 pages, in English; 12 pages, in French)

This amendment proposes to introduce seat belt requirements for large buses, excluding school and transit buses. In addition, this amendment proposes to require lap and shoulder type seat belts on all other non-transit and non-school medium duty buses. Finally, this amendment proposes to introduce seat belt attachment requirements when seat belts are installed on school buses. Lap-only seat belts would be prohibited from being installed on any school bus as research has indicated that lap-only belts may increase the risk of injury to children.

Motor vehicle manufacturers and importers are responsible for ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and its regulations. The Department of Transport monitors the self-certification programs of manufacturers and importers by reviewing their test documentation, inspecting vehicles, and testing vehicles obtained in the open market.
