Draft Guidelines approved by Decision No 140 of 28 March 2018 of the Sicilian Regional Council

The draft guidelines being notified identify the industries with an interest in this quality assurance scheme as well as the fundamental principles the relevant production rules should comply with, mainly in terms of quality guarantees, identifying the following areas of intervention for greater protection of consumer interests and health: animal health and welfare; protection of agro-biodiversity and genetic resources; environmental protection and wholesomeness of agricultural products and foodstuffs; quality aspects relating to intrinsic product characteristics, and other ethical, social, economic and environmental quality aspects.

The guidelines require the compliance of the production specifications with the specific principles for the areas of intervention and the minimum obligations, once the industries with an interest in the quality system and the general principles for drafting the production rules have been identified.

They describe the procedures for drafting the rules, providing for the approval of the draft production rules by the Regional Council, their submission to the information procedure pursuant to Directive (EU) 2015/1535 and, following the successful conclusion of said procedure, the final approval — by the Regional Council or by executive decree — and publication in the Official Gazette of the Sicilian Region.
