ELOT TS 1501-05-03-12-01 Skid resistant asphalt concrete wearing course

The works specified in this document relate to the construction of a skid resistant wearing course made of asphalt concrete.

The asphalt concrete used to make the skid resistant wearing course is an asphalt mix made and laid ‘hot’, with a strictly controlled composition, comprised of pure asphalt or asphalt modified with improving agents, as well as hard aggregates. Because of the asphalt concrete’s high mechanical tolerances, using this method ensures that (a) the road pavement is reinforced (when it is more than 4 cm thick) and (b) satisfactory surface characteristics (smoothness, uniformity, resistance to skidding and surface roughness) are achieved. If thin layers are applied on old road pavements, the adequacy of the existing road pavement’s load-bearing capacity (and the smoothness of the surface) need to be checked, and satisfactory adhesion of the final layer also needs to be ensured. Effective preparation for normal cases of wear and tear entails ‘cold’ milling and the application of a strong adhesive coating with a cationic emulsion.

Course type selection criteria:

TYPE 1: Asphalt concrete with a dense composition

TYPE 2: Asphalt concrete with an open composition

The recommendation thickness for courses of these types of asphalt mixes is 3-4 cm (for a nominal max. grain size of 12.5 mm) or 3 cm (for a nominal max. grain size of 10.0 mm).
