The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an independent third
party certification scheme utilising Certification Bodies accredited to
ISO/IEC 17065 certification scheme for renewable energy technologies and
installation services. MCS would like to notify a scheme document: MCS
008: Product Certification Scheme Requirements - Biomass.

The purpose of MCS 008 is summarised below:

This Scheme provides the facilities for ongoing independent, third
party assessment and approval of companies who wish to demonstrate that
their Biomass product meets and continues to meet the requirements of
this standard.

General Requirements

This Scheme provides ongoing independent, third party assessment
and approval of companies who wish to demonstrate that their solid
biomass fired heating product, with nominal heat output up to 45 kW.

For the purposes of this Microgeneration Standard, solid biofuel
heating products are defined as: biofuel appliances designed and tested
to burn only solid renewable biofuels under the following standards:

BS EN 13240:2001+A2:2004; OR

BS EN 14785:2006; OR

BS EN 12809:2001+A1:2004; OR

BS EN 303-5:2012; OR

Annex A of this standard - Condensing Biomass Boilers

AND

The performance and emission criteria detailed in Clause 7.

Microgeneration Certification Scheme:

MCS 008: Product Certification Scheme Requirements: Biomass

Issue: 3.0

The Member States are respectfully referred to the MCS document 008:
Product Certification Scheme Requirements - Biomass. Issue 3.0.

MCS 008 sets out the product certification scheme requirements for Biomass products.

It is being notified on the basis that the BEIS offer a financial
incentive (the Renewable Heat Incentive) to consumers should they
install renewable heat generating technologies certified under the MCS
or equivalent schemes.

As per the Directive 2015/1535/EU, BEIS is required to notify MCS
product standards that have mandatory requirements to the EU Commission
and Member States accordingly through Business Energy & Industrial
Strategy (BEIS).
